Summary of the Role

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Legal to lead our Legal function, providing expert guidance and support on legal matters across our diverse operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal and Risk Officer, the Head of Legal will oversee the organisation’s legal framework, including governance, regulatory compliance, risk management and strategic projects.

 

The Head of Legal will be responsible for providing proactive, solutions-oriented legal advice to senior management and business units. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial law, experience in a regulated industry and a demonstrated ability to navigate complex legal and regulatory landscapes. 

 

Key Duties:

  • Lead the organisation’s legal function, providing expert legal advice and support on corporate, commercial, regulatory and risk-related matters.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain legal frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Oversee contract negotiations, including drafting, reviewing, and managing a wide range of commercial agreements.
  • Provide guidance and support on a wide variety of legal matters including privacy, intellectual property, employment law and corporate governance.
  • Manage legal risk by identifying potential issues and advising on risk mitigation strategies to protect the organisation’s interests.
  • Act as a key advisor to senior leadership and the board on legal matters, supporting informed decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Lead and mentor the legal team, fostering a culture of excellence, integrity, and continuous development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of legal strategy with business objectives.
  • Liaise with external counsel and manage legal resources efficiently.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in relevant laws and regulations, ensuring that the organisation remains compliant and proactive in addressing new legal challenges.

 

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong leadership skills, sound legal judgment and a strategic mindset. You will be adept at managing complex legal matters in a regulated environment and have a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law and admission to practice law in New South Wales.
  • 8+ years of experience in corporate, commercial or regulatory law, with a proven track record in a senior legal position.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, ideally with experience in a regulated industry.
  • Proven experience in providing legal support on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, including contract negotiation and regulatory compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise senior management and boards on complex legal issues and provide strategic guidance.
  • High level of integrity and accountability, with a strong ethical foundation and commitment to maintaining compliance standards.
  • Leadership experience, including managing and developing a team of legal professionals and leading high performing teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented approach with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
